Liver, spleen, kidney complaints
Refrigerant (reduces body heat), mild spasmodic, diuretic, antiscorbutic. Used in scurvy and in diseases of liver, spleen, kidney and bladder; also in dysuria, stomatitis and dysentery. A paste of leaves is applied to swellings, erysipelas, burns and scalds. Seeds—diuretic, antidysenteric; applied externally to burns and scalds.
Plant is boiled and the water used for treating arthritis or muscle pains by the Guyana Patamona. Juice from macerated plant is applied as an antiseptic to cuts and bruises to stop bleeding and to heal wounds, by the Guyana Patamona. Stem and Leaf: Crushed in water for an hypotensive by the French Guiana Palikur. Leaf: In Surinam, leaves mixed with sugar or soap are applied onto mature abscesses. In French Guiana an infusion of leaves is used as a cholagogue, to treat renal colic, and to prepare the body before taking a purgative. Crushed and mixed with coconut oil and vinegar, and placed on sprained limbs. Infusion is antidiabetic and digestive; as an emollient; crushed and mixed with grease or oil into an unguent which is rubbed on sprained or torn muscles; makes a refreshing purgative drink, which also serves to diminish the leakages of albuminuria [Medicinal Plants of the Guianas (Guyana, Surinam, French Guiana)]

Gulasiman or purslane is reported to be used locally as an anti-hemorrhagic, diuretic and remedy for bums and skin diseases. Gulasiman decoction - The whole plant is used, 9-15 gm. dried or 30-150 gm fresh. The decoction can be given daily in divided doses for bacterial dysentery, enteritis, urinary tract infections, leukorrhea and mastitis. Several reports also cite its use for whooping cough. External Uses - The crushed fresh plant can be applied externally to stop bleeding, including uterine bleeding following child delivery. Ayurvedic uses: Purgative, diuretic, febrifugal, expectorant, stomachic. Leaves—used internally and externally in scabies, ringworm and other skin diseases. A hot decoction is given as an antiperiodic. Seeds— used for cough, whooping cough and convulsions. Roasted seeds (roasting destroys the purgative property) are mixed with coffee for strength.

The pods contain sennosides and anthraquinones; seeds polysaccharides, galactomannan; leaves dianthronic hetroside; pericarp apigenin; roots emodol; plant xanthone—cassiolin; seeds phytosterolin; flowers physcion and its glucosides, emodin and betasitosterol. The volatile oil obtained from the leaves, roots and seeds showed antibacterial and antifungal activity.

The seeds, when fed to animals, resulted in weight loss and also were found to be toxic to experimental animals. Leaves are preferred to quinine as a tonic, seeds are considered as a haemateinic toxic and root is used as a hepatic tonic.

USES: Whole plant: Decoction for hypertension, diabetes, biliousness and fever; grippe, thrush; boiled and gargled for throat trouble; pounded and mixed with wood-ash and rubbed on areas of leishmaniasis and eczema. Used for coughs and colds and for “lining cold” (puerperal fever) in NW Guyana. Root: Tincture rubbed onto rheumatic areas; decoction for a purgative and emetic; infusion for cholagogue and skin diseases. Infusion for bilious fever, ordinary fever, stomachache, and to ease menstruation. Tea made from roots and dried flowers is used for colds and upset stomach. Used for diarrhea in NW Guyana. Leaf: Remedy for renal calculi. Leaves are made into a tea for treating afterbirth problems. Used for treating fevers, coughs and colds, headaches, hemorrhage and thrush in NW Guyana. Flower: In a preparation to reduce stomach acid in children. Seed: Dried, pulverised and roasted as a coffee substitute, and for use as a febrifuge. Infusion is drunk to calm one's nerves. In NW Guyana, used for treating kidney problems, hemorrhage, worms, and cleaning womb and tubes in NW Guyana. Roots and heart wood of Coomb teak are reported to contain gmelinol, hentriacontanol, n-octacosanol and b-sitosterol. The roots contain sesquiterpenoid and apiosylskimmin, a coumarin characterised as umbelliferone-7-apiosyl glucoside and gmelofuran. The heart wood gives ceryl alcohol, cluytyl ferulate, lignans, arboreol, gmelonone, 6”-bromo isoarboreol, lignan hemiacetal and gummidiol. Leaves yield luteolin, apigenin, quercetin, hentriacontanol, b-sitosterol, quercetogenin and other flavons. Fruits contain butyric acid, tartaric acid, and saccharine substances

The roots are acrid, bitter, tonic, stomachic, laxative, galactogogue, demulcent, antibilious, febrifuge and anthelmintic. Bark is bitter, hypoglycaemic, antiviral, anticephalalgic and tonic. The leaves are demulcent, antigonorrhoeic and bechic. Flowers are sweet, refrigerant, astringent and acrid. Fruits are acrid, efrigerant, diuretic, astringent, aphrodisiac, trichogenous, alterant and tonic.

Leaf—demulcent, bechic. Used for removing foetid dis charges from ulcers. Root— stomachic, laxative, antibilious, demulcent, galactagogue. Bark— anticephalalgic. Root and bark— febrifuge.

Seeds are used in dysuria, polyuria, urolithiasis, also in epilepsy. The seeds, leaves and trunk bark gave diabolin (major alkaloid) and acetyldiabolin. Seeds alsogavebrucine, strychnine, novacine, icajine, oleanolic acid and its glycoside. Leaves and bark gave isomotiol, stigmasterol, campesterol and sitosterol. Diabolin exhibits hypotensive activity. A decoction of seeds is given to treat stammering. The seeds resemble those of Nuxvomica but are non-poisonous. The ripe seeds are used for clearing muddy water.

Adaptogen, central nervous system relaxant, peripheral vasodilator, sedative, antibiotic, detoxifier, blood-purifier, laxative, diuretic, emmenagogue. Used as a brain tonic for improving memory and for overcoming mental confusion, stress, fatigue, also used for obstinate skin diseases and leprosy.

Extracts orally to treat stress-induced stomach and duodenal ulcers; topically to accelerate healing, particularly in cases of chronic postsurgical and post trauma wounds; also to treat second and third degree burns. Patients suffering from venous insufficiency were treated with a titrated extract of the drug. (WHO.) Used in Indian medicine as a brain tonic and sedative. (Indian Herbal Pharmacopoeia.)

This herb is said to have a direct action on lowering the blood pressure and is often referred to as a rejuvenating medicament. The leaves are eaten raw or finely cut and roasted with scraped coconut. They are believed to purify the blood and cure indigestion, nervousness and dysentery. In some parts of India, the leaves are dried, powdered and taken with milk, to improve the memory. The plant is useful both internally and externally for skin diseases, chronic and obstinate eczema, secondary and tertiary syphilis with ulceration, enlargement of glands, leprosy, abscesses and chronic rheumatism. It has a special influence on the urino-genital tract and set up urinary and ovarian irritation. It has been employed as a diuretic in several diseases. An ointment prepared from the liquid extract of the plant with ghee is used as an external application on elephantiasis, enlarged scrotum, while the liquid extract is given internally. The expressed juice of the leaves with cow’s milk and powdered root of Glycyrrhiza glabra L. is given as an alternative tonic. (Medicinal Plants of Cylone)

The roots and rhizomes are used in traditional system of medicine. Its abortifacient and antipyretic properties have been mentioned in ancient classics “Charaka”. The name Garbhaghatini is due to this abortifacient activity. They are useful in the treatment of inflammations, ulcers, scrofula, hemorrhoids, pruritus, dyspepsia, helminthiasis, flatulence, intermittent fevers and debility. The root is given internally as an effective antidote against cobra poison. A paste of the root is also used as an anodyne; applications in bites of poisonous insects, snake bites, scorpion sting, parasitic skin diseases and leprosy.
